L'aménagement linguistique dans le monde by Jacques Leclerc - one of my favorite sites

Jacques Leclerc

So, you are interested in language policy, but don't know where to start. If you are looking for a single source to find out about language policies in Quebec, elsewhere in Canada and almost everywhere in the world, you will not go wrong by consulting Jacques Leclerc's site, L'aménagement linguistique dans le monde.

Mr. Leclerc works with CEFAN, the Chair at Laval University for the development of research on French-speaking culture in North America. Among other recognitions, he was the recipient of the George-Émile Lapalme prize in 2023.

On the site the Internet user has the choice of accessing states, countries or regions by continent, by alphabetical order (all States or territories), by the official language(s), the people or by the type of policy linguistic each of these States has adsopted: assimilation, non-intervention, unilingualism, official bilingualism, etc.

The site presents the specific language situations and policies of 400 states or territories spread across 195 countries - it presents analysies of 276 different states or territories.

It summarizes the linguistic status of each of these countries. It explains the two main linguistic approaches - territorial and personal rights.

It is also possible to search for information using THEMES such as Francophonie, the history of French and some other languages, language families, world languages (counting, geographical distribution, bilingualism, etc.), non-sovereign states (including Catalonia, Louisiana, Quebec, New Brunswick etc.), and linguistic laws (see the presentation of 2,000 linguistic laws  or constitutions around the world.

As a bonus, Mr. Leclerc adds an important historical component. He analyzes in particular New France, the history of French in Quebec and the history of Acadians.

Enjoy the site.
